Rant: Stop Getting Mad At Frozen Criticism

So with the hype for Moana, a lot of people are pretty excited. Not only is Moana herself beautiful, she’s Disney’s first Polynesian Princess and the first Princess of Colour since Tiana.

If you’ve been on the internet, you probably know that a lot of people (especially people of colour) are pretty effing sick of Frozen. It’s been three years, and yet Disney chooses to market the movie to death while utterly ignoring almost all their other animated properties, especially those with non-white casts (The Princess and the Frog and Big Hero 6). So naturally, they’re not going to be too discreet when they say they hope Moana knocks Frozen off its pedestal.

And how do people react?

They derail. They see posts where someone expresses how frustrated they are with Frozen’s popularity and want Moana to be popular and go “but but Frozen is a good movie your criticisms are all wrong don’t you DARE say anything bad about Frozen. Oh yeah and having a POC heroine is good. But you don’t have to put down other princesses to bring her up”.

What really amazes me is that after three years of this nonsense, people STILL can’t accept that people don’t like their precious perfect movie and have legit reasons for it.

I also really hate how when we have a new Princess of Colour all people can do is rush over to defend their white faves. In a world where Anna and Elsa are everywhere and SO MANY PEOPLE gush over them, why does it matter if someone on the internet feels the opposite to you? It may sting, sure, but it’s not going to hurt you in the long run, is what I mean. Disney’s non-white princesses don’t have that luxury, so, you know, maybe you can put aside your love of Frozen to make sure Moana reaches its popularity?

And oh my god ‘pitting women against each other’ THEY’RE NOT REAL. Elsa and Anna aren’t going to cry if someone says anything bad about them. Not everyone likes Elsa and Anna and a lot of people don’t see them as feminist or good role models. Besides which, I don’t see these people rushing to defend Tiana when people put her down in favour of other princesses, so why does the opposite happen with Anna and Elsa?

Look, you can like Frozen, but at this point, you have no right to act all anal and surprised when someone says they don’t like it and derail them. We’re not living in a world where all of Disney’s big hits get all the attention they deserve anymore; we’re living in a world where Frozen seems to be the only Disney animated film that matters and IT’S NOT FAIR that it’s taken up so much space in merchandising and the public conscious. It doesn’t matter if you think comments like “it’s overrated” “It has pointless merch” “it doesn’t deserve the hype” are just opinions or if you think Frozen haters are irrational, it’s a FACT that Disney has been biased and even racist and people are worried that the same fate is going to happen to Moana. So, you know, the anger is kind of justified.

As you can see, I’m really frustrated. It’s bad enough that I can’t find anything for BH6 even though it’s a movie that’s very dear to me and many other people but can still find Frozen merch. It’s worse that I can’t get excited without being told that if I in ANY WAY say I like it more or want it to do better than Frozen I’m somehow a bad person.

At this point, I am completely done talking about Frozen. I’m going to devote as much as I can to making Moana a big hit and gets the marketing it deserves. If two non-princess hits couldn’t get it, maybe another Princess will.
